Find Your Passion

Being passionate about what you do is so important for every aspect of your life.  As we get older we tend to lose our passion as the day to day tasks of life take their toll on us.  Mundane and routine take over and passion somehow falls by the wayside.  I am a firm believer that to live a truly fulfilling life you need to find something that you love, that you can get excited about.  This month’s guest blogger is a fellow photograpHER, Victoria Blackshear, based in Charlotte, NC and I’m so excited that she found her passion in life and is letting you all know exactly how you can do the same!

My ultimate goal was to graduate from high school, go to college, and play volleyball. However, I began dating a really awesome football player during my junior year. Three years later, we were married and now we have two beautiful children.

With two small children, my lengthy day seems to never end. My laborious day begins with the the aroma of hazelnut coffee at 4:30 a.m. I then move hastily around my home to get myself and our children ready for school and out the house by 6:30 a.m. After the initial hustle and bustle, my work day begins at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m. I usually pick my children up around 5 p.m. after spending the interim time doing grocery shopping, cleaning, laundry, and preparing dinner. Once I pick up my kids in the the evening from after-school care, the nightly routine begins and we prep for the next day.

When my family goes to sleep, and the night grows quiet, my mind is still awake. I am wondering, “What did I accomplish today? Did it bring me happiness? What did I do for others? Lastly, I wonder, “Did it leave me passionate, on fire, and ready to try again?”

Two years ago, I received a phone call that changed my life. My father asked me, “What are you passionate about?” During my moment of total silence, I considered sharing my love for my family, the bond that my twin and I share, and my love for words. Instead, I inhaled and searched my heart, and exhaled the truth. My response to my father was that I loved photography, and all things beautiful. He responded by simply saying, “I’d like to help with that. Two weeks later I received a Canon Rebel T5 accompanied by two kit lenses.

That camera ignited a fire in my soul. Does that mean that my husband and children aren’t enough to keep me busy? Or that the ups and down of motherhood don’t wear me out? Absolutely not. It simply means that outside my daily routine of life, there lies a deeper passion within me, a gift. I believe that we all possess a gift, that if awakened, it could drastically change our lives. What becomes of our gifts: My answer…passion and purpose for life.

What is your passion? Passion is a feeling that sets your soul on fire. Passion keeps you up at night and wakes you up early. It is the very thing that your mind wanders to and lingers on during your down time.

Where is your passion?Passion is deep within. Though it may not be visible, your passion can be felt by others. When we do things with passion, we allow the world in, we allow that experience which makes us feel alive.

Photography is a lens by which I can view the world with a more loving eye. As I capture precious pictures for families, I am grabbing special moments in time and freezing them, so they can be rediscovered as memories fad. I am creating memories that will spark hours of long conversations around the coffee table.

When I photograph an infant’s finger, a pregnant mother’s fullness, and a college graduate’s excitement, a fire lying dormant in me sparks a flame.

Photography is my passion. If my passion is not touching lives, then what’s the point? Our passion was never meant to be bottled up and savored for ourselves. Passion is to be tapped into, expressed, and released. I am in my early thirties, in my 9th year of marriage, with an Undergrad and Masters degree wrapped tightly under my belt. However, I decided to be bold and to follow my passion. I decided to release my passion. My advice: Release your passion today.

Luverta B. | Rock Hill, SC Branding Session

sc branding photographyLuverta B. | Rock Hill, SC Branding Session

Miss Luverta (I call her that because I feel like some people just deserve that title) contacted me regarding a branding session for herself.  She’s an author that wanted some updated images for her new books.  I was of course more than happy that she saw something in my work that would make her want to have me take on this task for her.  We agreed to have her session be two-fold.  The first part would take place in beautiful Glencairn Garden where despite it being mid-summer the colors were rich and beautiful.  It had rained the night before so the ground was dewy which made the colors in the park even more lush.  This part of her branding session showed off a softer and more feminine side of Luverta before we left the park and headed to our second location.

Right around the corner from Glencairn Garden is the downtown area of Rock Hill, SC.  It’s one of my favorite places to shoot because early on a weekend morning the streets are quiet and my clients and I pretty much have the entire area to ourselves.  Luverta’s second look was definitely more business.  She had a playful take on a man’s business suit that fit in perfectly with the downtown backdrop.  I look forward to Miss Luverta’s books coming out in the future and I hope one of the images from this session will grace author’s bio section.  If you’re an entrepreneur, small business owner or just need some updated headshots for your LinkedIn profile I’d love for you to reach out to me so that we can discuss your upcoming session.  Branding shoots are one of my specialties and I love working with all types of brands.  Contact me now so we can begin discussing your ideas!

2018 Senior Rep: Mahagony

My third, and final, Senior Rep is Mahagony Rose. She’s a senior at Fort Mill High School that describes herself as unique and creative. Her creativity comes through with her love of guitar playing. I’ve gotten to know Mahagony well over the last few years and she’s one of the most outspoken, well mannered and vivacious young women I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.

Her spirit shines the brightest when she’s actively involved in a cause she cares about like women and minority rights. It’s been fun watching her grow into herself over the last few years and I knew because of her perspective on life that she would make a great DBP Senior Representative.

While we had grand plans initially for her session with thoughts of everything from waterfalls to spanish moss hanging from majestic trees, but in the end we opted for the eclectic NoDa neighborhood in Charlotte, NC. It’s a place a lot of creatives enjoy spending their time in and the vibrant colors fit well with Mahagony’s attire and personality. I’m looking forward to seeing Mahagony’s growth as a person as she finalizes her senior year and enters college and know she well represent DBP well during her final stretch at Fort Mill High.

2018 Senior Rep: Jadah

Jadah is my second senior rep for this current school year and it was so much fun working with her and her mother Rhonda.  From our initial meeting at Starbuck’s I knew I was going to enjoy getting to know them and Jadah is such a beautiful girl, both inside and out, I just knew she’d make an excellent representative for my business.  Jadah attends High School in Charlotte, NC.  She’s a part of the National Honor Society and participates in the Spanish book club.  When she’s not in class she enjoys catching up on her latest shows and going shopping.  She definitely sounds like me when I was her age, and even now!  She has aspirations to one day become a doctor and to be able to help as many people as possible.  Like I said, true beauty inside and out.

For Jadah’s session we met bright and early at my home where I took us all for a little drive out into the country.  I always feel bad for making my reps wake up so early for their sessions (I know how much teenagers covet their sleep), but Jadah was more than willing to do what was necessary to get the best out of her shoot.  We went to one of my favorite locations to and made some serious magic!  We visited the woods, a lush green field and I even got her to go along with my plan of playing in the cornfield.  It made for some stunning images of her.  I look forward to seeing where Jadah’s school year and upcoming endeavors take her.  She has the right attitude about life so I know that whatever she puts her mind and heart to she’ll achieve it.  Stay tuned to the blog later this month for my third and final Senior Rep session!

2018 Senior Rep: Taylor

denise benson photography2018 Senior Rep: Taylor

This year marks the third year that I have done my Senior Rep program and so it’s only fitting that I have three amazing teens to share with you all this year!  It’s a fun program where I get to meet teens I’d otherwise maybe never get the opportunity to meet and work with.  My first rep is the absolutely stunning Taylor.  She’s a cheerleader and student council officer at High School in Charlotte, NC.  Taylor has a 1000 watt smile, but such a laid back attitude that makes her easy to get along with.  She describes herself as energetic and charismatic and I couldn’t agree more!  In her free time she enjoys competitive dance, traveling and shopping.  Truly a girl after my own heart…well maybe not the competitive dance stuff, but I’m all about heading out of town and buying a great pair of shoes or a cute handbag.

The morning of her uptown Charlotte, NC session I met Taylor and her mom inside of Amelie’s, an eclectic French bakery and cafe.  We made our way up and down the streets of the busy Queen City and had a blast doing it!  Taylor is a natural to work with which makes her a dream for any photographer.  We ended her Senior Rep session back at the cafe where we ordered macarons (another reason she’s a girl after my own heart!) and took a few cute photos that were a little off the beaten path of a normal senior session.

I know she’s going to make an excellent representative for DBP and I can’t wait to see what her future holds for her.  Make sure to stay tuned to the blog in the coming weeks so you can meet my other two reps and see where our adventures took us!
