Queen Photographers Headshot Swap | Rock Hill, SC Photography

I always have such a good time with my Rock Hill/Charlotte Queen Photographer members.  Each month we get together in Rock Hill, SC and discuss different photography topics that are pertinent to our industry and the growth and development of our businesses.  And to say that we have a great time filled with a lot of knowledge, advice and lots of laughs is an understatement.

For 2017, we introduced a new aspect to our meetups based on the desire of our members and that now includes regular photowalks.  Our first photowalk meetup was a headshot swap and it turned out to be such a fun day for everyone involved!  Although January is typically known for being cold in the south, this day was anything but and we definitely took advantage of the warm weather and sunshine that lingered throughout the afternoon.  Our Rock Hill/Charlotte group is fairly small and we tend to see the same faces over and over again so it was a pleasant surprise to see new people attend!  Even one out of towner that was making it her purpose to attend meetings in different areas of the state to get to know more Queens.

We met just outside of Amelie’s French Cafe and then began making our way through what is considered Old Town in Rock Hill, SC.  We took turns photographing one another and then broke off into teams of two while we had an audience watching.  That definitely made for an interesting ending to our day together.  I truly enjoyed shooting alongside these talented ladies and am already anticipating our future 2017 meetups as well as photowalks.  If you’re a woman of color photographer in South Carolina, North Carolina or Georgia and are looking to connect with other like-minded creatives then definitely look us up.  We would love to have you as part of the Queen Photographer family!

Katrina S. Branding Session | Re-Source Solutions | Rock Hill, SC

A few weeks ago I had the extreme pleasure of meeting and working with Dr. Katrina Spigner, Founder and CEO of Re-Source Solutions, a personal and professional growth and development consulting firm based out of Columbia, SC. Katrina and I linked up through another one of my branding clients, Bianca Crawford of The Crawford Austin Agency, and I’m so glad we did!  From the moment she stepped out of her vehicle we hit it off immediately. Her personality is so warm and inviting and I just knew her session was going to be a lot of fun.
I always enjoy getting to know my clients over the course of their session and I particularly enjoy getting to know all about their business endeavors when it’s a branding client. Katrina is such an inspiration for women! Not only does she help others develop their growth in every aspect of their lives, but she is also an accomplished author, having written three inspirational books, a professor as well a member of what I consider to be the greatest sorority in the world, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

With so many accomplishments in her arsenal you would consider someone like this to be larger than life, but Katrina is anything but that.  She was so down to earth during our time together and we shared many laughs, even at the expense of my horrible attempt at  joke telling.  I am already eagerly anticipating our next session together and look forward to seeing what else the future holds for her and her business. I know whatever it is it will be as bright as her smile.

Photography Coaching Sessions

photography coaching

I’m SUPER excited to announce the launch of my new coaching program!  I have toyed around with the idea of offering some sort of mentoring program for probably the last 6-8 months.  With each inquiry I would receive from a budding photographer wanting to shadow or assist me and “pick my brain” for information as well as asking questions they have regarding their craft I would mull it over more and more.  And then the idea would fade away.  I suppose I would talk myself out of it without realizing that’s what I was doing.  Well, after bringing the idea to a group of photography friends I decided to go for it!  2017 ismy year of being dauntless.  Determined and fearless.  So without allowing myself to backtrack and come up with a zillion reasons why this isn’t a good idea I jumped in feet first and now I’m officially bringing the program to you!

My coaching program will be offered in two packages: in-person and online.  These sessions are for photographers looking to take their business and brand to the next level.  This will not be an introductory to photography course and a working knowledge of how to shoot in manual will be required.  I’m not looking to teach photography (there are plenty of others that can do the technical aspect much better than I can), but more so to help amateur photographers perfect and build upon what they already know as well as focusing on the business side of their brand.

Online coaching sessions will feature a 2 hour “Pick Your Brain” session where we will go over the 10 page digital workbook I’ve created as well as any questions you have on how to make your business even better.  These sessions will begin at $175.

In-person coaching sessions will feature a 2 hour “Pick Your Brain’ session with a physical 10 page workbook as well as going over any questions you have.  After the in-person session has endedyou will be able to choose from one of two options: 1. Assist me on a future client session where you will be able to watch me work and see how I interact with my clients first hand or 2. Join me immediately after your session where we will spend the next hour practicing with our cameras and where you can ask questions as we shoot.  The in-person session will also include 2 high-res headshot images perfect for using on your website and social media accounts.  These sessions will begin at $275.

I’m looking forward to this next chapter in my career and am passionate about working with other dreamers, creators and go-getters!  If you feel like you could benefit from my coaching program I would love to hear from you.  Contact me via email or telephone so we can discuss your bright future!

The Queen Photographers Take San Antonio

A few weeks ago I, along with a few other members of The Queen Photographers organization visited San Antonio, TX for our first Imaging USA experience as a group.  Although weather kept most of us from arriving on time once we were finally settled into our Airbnb home we were ready to take on this conference!  Our mornings were spent in classes getting some great information by wonderful instructors like Sue Bryce and Mel Robbins and each afternoon we hit up the expo that had some great vendors with great product deals like Sigma, 17Hats, ShootProof and many more!

We also had the opportunity to explore a bit of San Antonio with a great lunch at Rosario’s and sightseeing at The Alamo and Riverwalk.  Our first evening took us to Max’s Wine Dive where we celebrated my birthday followed by the official Imaging Welcome Party which is where the photographers definitely got loose and had a lot of fun!

And of course you know we couldn’t let the opportunity pass us by to photograph one another.  Whether it was inside of our home for the weekend that had the MOST amazing natural light or in the streets of San Antonio, we had a blast capturing each other.

Your Best Skin For Winter Weather

Your Best Skin For Winter Weather

Today marks the first day and month of my Guest Blogger Series.  Over the course of 2017 I plan to collaborate with different entrepreneurs, creatives, etc and bring you a new guest blogger each month.  It’s something I’m super excited about and that I hope my readers will enjoy!

When E’toshia McFarland reached out to me about guest blogging I was excited to be working with someone in the skincare industry because it’s such an important part of my regular routine.  I don’t like to break the budget on skincare products, but I do love to have healthy, glowing skin.  When we discussed possible dates for her post and we settled on the winter months I just knew she would be the perfect go to person to teach us how to properly care for our skin during this time of year.  She is a talented makeup artist (Faces by Etosh Makeup Artistry) based out of Columbia, SC.  She specializes in providing ‘eye popping beauty’ looks for women, through the means of proper skincare first, followed by glamour.  She is a recent graduate of the Kenneth Shuler School of Cosmetology Esthetics program and is a firm believe that “makeup is only as good as the skin underneath it.”

winter weather blues

Grandpa Winter has arrived and brought Uncle Dry, Aunty Cracked and Cousin Ashy along for the ride. You’ve scheduled family portraits and want your skin to look its best. You don’t want the photographer working overtime correcting your dry patches, fine lines and dull skin in Photoshop. So what can you do to get your skin photo shoot ready with no filter? Here are some tips I follow on how to properly repair my skin during the winter months, resulting in refreshed looking skin just in time for a photo shoot. What’s even more awesome about these tips is that they are appropriate for males and females! Yup, you heard me right guys, so let’s jump into it.

CLEANSE: Cleanse your skin daily to remove any surface debris and oil accumulated throughout the day caused by the environment. Remember to choose a cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type.

Skin Type Treatment
DRY- Lacks Oil Creamy products that stimulate oil production
DEHYDRATED- Lacks Water Hydrating moisturizers and gel masks
NORMAL- Good Oil- Water Balance Maintain good skin care routine
COMBINATION-Oily/Dry + Oily/Normal Cleanse, exfoliate, use water based products
OILY-Excess Sebum Production Cleanse, exfoliate, use water based hydrator
SENSITIVE- Easily Irritated Refrain from exfoliating and heat exposure

EXFOLIATE: Exfoliation aids in sloughing off dead skin cells to improve the skin’s appearance. Incorporate exfoliation into your skin care routine 1 to 2 times a week. This process should be done after you cleanse your skin.

MOISTURIZE: Moisturize your skin while it is still damp with an oil based moisturizer to reduce transepidermal water loss. Using an occlusive product that is thick in texture such as cocoa butter or shea butter, will help further hold in moisture and protect the skin’s top barrier layer. This is a great way to fight off dry, cracked and ashy skin on the body, especially on the hands and feet.

EYE CREAM: Incorporate the use of eye creams early on in your skin care routine to slow down the production of fine lines, wrinkles and puffiness. I would suggest using an eye cream in your early 20’s. Eye creams are thick in consistency to help protect the thin, delicate tissue around the eye area. Remember to use day and night to see benefits of firmness, reduced lines and decreasing puffiness.

SUNSCREEN: The most common misconception is that people of a darker complexion do not need to use sunscreen. That is TOTALLY untrue! The use of sunscreen daily helps to protect the skin from the sun’s rays. Excessive sun exposure leads to aging along with hyperpigmentation and skin cancer.

INTERNAL/EXTERNAL FACTORS: Keep in mind that a healthy skin care journey is also dependent on internal and external factors in your life. Such factors include habits, diet, exercise, medications, your environments, vitamin intake, hormones etc.
