2016 Fall Mini Sessions Pt. 1

glencairn garden mini session

Every year the closer I get to fall the more I anticipate my Fall Mini Sessions.  I love meeting new clients and reconnecting with clients past and it’s just a fun filled day for everyone involved.  This year my sessions went back to where it all began, Glencairn Garden.  But instead of moving towards the back end of the park, we focused on the lush greenery, fountains and gravel roads where the park begins.  I like to offer variety with my sessions and never want one to look exactly like the next, even when taking place at the very same location.

My first family, featuring Christie,  her sister Nia, daughter Kaci and of course the adorable Olaf were a true joy to work with!  It was my first time working with them and they totally brought it for their session!  They brought the laughter, smiles and poses for their session.  And can we just talk about the wardrobe?!  Perfect for a fall shoot!  And the shoes…I’m a shoe lover and every time I stopped and looked down I saw a pair of shoes I wouldn’t mind having in my closet.  I hope I get the chance to work with these ladies again in the future because they started my day off on such a wonderful note!

Next up was a family I’ve grown to really adore.  Rhyles, her husband Brandon and little Aden came dressed in their Sunday best for their fall session!  The first time I worked with Aden I don’t think he was too fond of having a large camera pointed towards him, but this time he was geared up and ready.  He even showed me a range of emotions he’d been practicing for his shoot and he nailed every single one.  At the end of their session I was even blessed with some delicious food from their take-out restaurant Master Aden’s Caribbean Takeout which I happily devoured once my day was finished.  If you love good, authentic Caribbean food definitely check them out!

#FILTERFREE

#FILTERFREE

First let me preface this post by indicating that I LOVE a good filter.  LOVE.  I use phone apps like Snapseed, Boomerang, or Piczoo or on a pretty regular basis.  I would venture to say that about 95% of my personal images go through some filtering app or another.  In a day and age where image is so relevant of course we want to put the best of ourselves out there, even if it is slightly tweaked.  So having said that I want to educate my clients and readers about why you shouldn’t filter your professional photos.

The average Joe probably doesn’t think twice about taking one of their lovely, professionally edited images from a recent photo session and slapping a $1 (or sometimes even free) filter over it and posting it to social media.  No harm no foul, right?  Wrong.  We as photographers take great pride in the work we produce.  It doesn’t begin and end during the session.  Not to bore you with a bunch of details you don’t care to read about, but the actual session itself is probably the easiest part of our entire process.  After we part ways with our clients we then go home or to our office and spend the next 2-4 hours (for the average family session) in front of our computer screens making sure every image is up to our standards.  We work hard to have a cohesive aesthetic with each image and because we are the ones behind the lens and whose name is on the business card you called it is our work.  Our art.  Not to compare myself to a legendary artist like Michaelangelo or DaVinci, but no one would fathom the idea of walking up to one of their works of art and slapping red paint across it to make it more beautiful.  But essentially when you filter one of our photos or crop it in a way that wasn’t intended that’s exactly what you’re doing.  You are taking our work of art and making it something we never intended it to be.  Once you filter it it’s no longer my work.

Thankfully I haven’t run into this issue too often, but with the new (and absolutely fun!) app Artisto popping up all over my different social media accounts I felt now was the time to address this issue.  Many photographers, myself included, have it written in our contracts that additional editing by someone other than the photographer is strictly prohibited.  So not only does it kind of hurt our feelings that you didn’t think the original photo was good enough so you had to add a filter to it to make it better, but it’s also in direct violation of your contract.  As I stated earlier, I know most people don’t look at it this way.  They’re just wanting to use a fun app to play around with.  But if you love your photographer please make sure to keep their images #filterfree.  We thank you in advance!

It’s All In The Details

It’s All In The Details | Brakefield, Rock Hill, SC

I adore wedding day details!  There’s nothing quite like walking into a beautifully lit bridal suite while the bride is being pampered by her fantastic hair and makeup team and seeing the details she has thoughtfully prepared to be included in her wedding album.  It makes my heart flutter and I get excited about the endless possibilities of how to execute gorgeous photos she will treasure for many years to come.

Each DBP bride receives a wedding guide upon booking my services and in that guide I include a list of things she may want to consider in her shot list and the details are always included.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind when considering which details you want captured for your big day:

  1. Make sure the space you’re using is clean and offers good lighting.  The last thing you want is for your photographer to spend his or her time cleaning up the area that you intend to use for their detail shots.  I know there is a lot going on in the bridal suite while prepping for your big day, but if you can designate at least one area of the room (preferably with the best light available – a nice window is perfect!) to use for photos then your photographer will definitely thank you!
  2. Pick out details that are thoughtful and meaningful to you.  Just because you saw it on Pinterest doesn’t mean it will work for you.  Pinterest is a great resource to find ideas you love, but then make them your own.  Choose items that will evoke an emotion and bring you back to your big day.  Are you planning to wear Chanel No. 5 on your big day because your soon-to-be husband loves the scent on you?  Include it!  Are you wearing your grandmother’s necklace as you walk down the aisle?  Make sure your photographer snaps a few photos of lying gently beside your bouquet.
  3. Not sure what details make sense or to include?  Here is just a small sampling that you can add to your shot list: Your shoes, wedding rings, bouquet, dress and hanger, invitation, ceremony program, perfume/cologne, wedding gift(s), books that have meaning to you as a couple, cufflinks, etc.  The possibilities are truly endless!

Before I Do Bridal Showcase

I officially have my first bridal showcase under my belt!  Boy is that a nice sentence to be able to say.  For the last few months, since signing up for the Before I Do Bridal Showcase hosted by Best Day Ever, I was busy mentally prepping, purchasing show items and table decor as well as keeping up with my day to day photography routine.  I was a bit nervous, just wanting to make sure my booth was up to par since I’d never attended a show before, but thankfully the world wide web has a plethora of information that helped to make my booth a success!

Along with the help of my sister, Olivia, who volunteered a few weeks in advance to come along as my assistant and helped me setup as well as manned my booth for me whenever I stepped away, the day was a hit!  My best friend, Kanitra, stopped by to surprise me as well as lend her support (as well as assisting my sister and I as we tore down the booth at the end of the day) and it means the world to me to have such a wonderful support system!

Throughout the day I met wonderful brides as well as vendors in the area.  It was great getting to know so many people and being able to showcase my work and love of photography.  I was happy to share my obsession with macarons with those that stopped by my booth thinking they were display only items because they were almost too pretty to eat!  I’m happy to say that my first show was a success and if I decide to try my hand at another bridal show I will definitely go into it with warm feelings

The Crawford Austin Agency | Columbia, SC

The Crawford Austin Agency | Columbia, SC

It’s not a secret that I love branding sessions.  There’s something exciting about working alongside another entrepreneur and helping them to bring the vision that they have for their business to life.  A few months ago Bianca Crawford, owner of The Crawford Austin Agency, a full service public relations, marketing and consulting firm located in Columbia, SC reached out to me regarding an updated branding session for her business.  The Crawford Austin Agency services clients nationwide and ‘believes in blending their talents with their clients’ needs to achieve optimal results.’  Once I realized Bianca was not only a fellow Gamecock, but also a Soror I knew the session was going to go well.

We began in Bianca’s home early on a gloomy Saturday morning and while our plan to eventually take to the streets of downtown Columbia, SC didn’t quite work out we definitely made the best of the situation.  Bianca’s home office was the perfect place to begin her session as we then made our way through her home into the living room and eventually outside.

The second half of the session took us to a Starbuck’s just down the road from where she lives.  Starbuck’s is a popular meeting destination as well as caffeine pick-me-up for any entrepreneur so it turned out to be the perfect backdrop!  We had a great time getting to know one another and Bianca’s personality instantly makes you feel at ease and like you’ve known her for years.  I’m excited to work with her on future collaborations.
