Amberly B. | Glencairn Garden

I love a good life celebration.  I’ve mentioned in my client blog posts before that you don’t have to have an occasion like graduation or a family to take professional photos.  Just celebrating another year of life and yourself is more than enough reason.  So I was elated to get a message from my cousin Amberly (affectionately known in our family as Fruit) indicating she was about to be 30 and wanted to celebrate her birthday with a session.  We decided to shoot half of her session in beautiful Glencairn Garden, which is stunning with flowers in full bloom this time of year and the other half of the session in Old Town.  She told me she’d be wearing a tulle skirt for her session and that she’d gotten her hands on a fabulous balloon as a prop, but that I had no idea what I was in for when she stepped out of her vehicle in glittery gold high heels!

Women are super resourceful when we put our minds to something we want to accomplish and Amberly is no exception.  During our session she told me about all the DIY stuff she’d done.  We follow each other on social media so I knew she could work her hair/makeup situation out on her own, but when she told me she made, yes MADE, her tulle skirt herself I was super impressed!  Her look, from head to toe, screamed ‘Life is a celebration!’  I love that she was so playful during our session.  We caught up on our current life events and just had an overall great time during our session.

The second half of our session called for a wardrobe change (still in keeping with the floral/spring theme) and took us to the streets of downtown Rock Hill.  As a self-professed Selfie Queen I had to get a couple of shots of her behind the phone lens.  We finally finished at the gorgeous fountain which made for a serene backdrop.  Spending an hour with her was so much fun and I’m happy she is bringing in a milestone birthday with a bang!

Queen’s Cup Steeplechase 2016

Queen’s Cup Steeplechase 2016

Last week I attended my first horse race and it was everything I imagined and so much more!  I’ve always pictured myself attending the Kentucky Derby but it seemed like a far off dream.  So when the opportunity presented itself to attend the Queen’s Cup Steeplechase right in my own backyard I jumped at the chance.  Any excuse to put on a pretty dress and a fancy hat works for me.  My friend Avis had attended a few times previously and knew exactly how everything worked.  With a group of friends in tow we began the planning process of securing our own tailgate area and all of the things that came with it.  Avis loves event planning (it’s definitely her calling!) and had a beautiful theme in mind that tied together ladies who lunch with a bit of whimsy.  She decided on the color palette of black, white, gold with pops of bright pink and it came together beautifully!  We spent weeks meeting up at places like Hobby Lobby to secure the right decor and decorating at each other’s homes.  I could already envision how wonderful this would turn out!

What I did’t envision was the hours it would actually take the two of us to set everything up, but it was well worth the effort.  Our main tablescape with gold chargers accenting a black and white striped table was a hit with everyone tailgating around us!  Several times we were asked if we were paid to do this or if we just loved our friends that much.  Of course it was the latter.

Our buffet table featured sandwiches, wraps, crackers and hummus, pasta salad, fruit and veggies.  And let’s not forget the desserts which were a huge success!  Beautiful cupcakes in shades of pink and yummy strawberries covered in pink chocolate and sugar.  To round things out we had a lemonade pitcher, sparkling wine and plenty of other spirits.  And the best part was the adorable milk jug style glasses to drink them out of along with black and white polka dot straws!

The food and setup was great, but the company was even greater.  Since none of us, aside from Avis, had attended an event like this before we weren’t quite sure what we were in for, but Avis made sure that we each had a great time.  After enjoying a good meal and some great conversation we had fun with our surrounding tailgaters doing a scavenger hunt and winning prizes.  The toy horse was a must for all of our fun photo challenges!

And of course no official Steeplechase post can be complete without a mention of the races themselves!  Our tailgate area was near one of the hurdles which gave us some great action to watch.  Thankfully I didn’t make any wagers this year since only one of my horses won.  I’m hoping for better luck next year.

The day was an absolute success and I am already looking forward to next year’s event!  I don’t know how we will top ourselves, but I’m sure with a bit of planning it can be done.  See you in 2017 Steeplechase!

Zaakira + Shaakira | Rock Hill, SC

I love it when my clients have a vision for their session.  I get to work with a lot of amazing people every week, but when they come to me with a specific vision in mind and put together everything from their wardrobe to their hairstyles to their makeup in such a thought out way I get a little giddy inside.  A few months ago Zaakira (half of the duo) contacted me regarding a birthday session for her and her twin sister, Shaakira.  Zaakira and I go back a few years when we both worked part time at Bath + Body Works.  We became fast friends and I used her as one of my models for last year’s bohemian styled shoot.  So she had a great understanding of what a session with me would be like.  She told me they wanted their theme to be African inspired and after explaining to me their wardrobe choices I knew we had to go to one of my favorite locations.

Their session took place on a Saturday evening in Rock Hill, SC and although the temperatures were a little crisp for mid-April, the lighting and weather could not have worked more in our favor.  I turned on Pandora to give the ladies some mood music and help them bring out their inner divas and we had a blast joking and talking about their session.

John Williams Campaign Session | Rock Hill, SC

John Williams Campaign Session | Rock Hill, SC

I honestly love my job because it affords me the opportunity to work with new people and try things I’ve never done before.  Mrs. Phyllis Williams contacted me a couple of weeks ago after some online research (yay for my site doing it’s job!) regarding some head shots for her husband.  Simple enough I thought.  I enjoy doing head shots and even though I don’t get to work with men on solo shoots that often I’ve done it before and adding another guy to my head shot portfolio is always a good thing.  She indicated that she wanted something casual and non-studio (also perfect for me since all of my sessions take place on location).  And then she indicated it would be for his campaign.  Well, that was certainly a new one for me.  I’ve never done campaign photos before, but it intrigued me and I am always up for a challenge.

So we moved forward with booking the session and finally met late one Sunday afternoon in downtown Rock Hill, also known as Old Town.  Mr. Williams, along with his wife, daughter and son all came super prepared.  We had a great time over the course of our session moving from location to location and talking about his upcoming run for York County Sheriff.

I’m not heavy into politics but I do like to consider myself an informed citizen and aside from being qualified (he has 33 years experience on the police force) I like for candidates to be relatable and Mr. Williams is definitely that.  His entire family was down to earth and such a pleasure to be around and work with.  I wish him luck on his upcoming campaign and if you live in York County I urge you to look into his platform on his Facebook page.

The Harris Family | Glencairn Garden

The Harris Family | Glencairn Garden

Around the time I was first getting started in photography, BJ Harris reached out to me regarding some Christmas photos for her family.  I’ve known BJ and her husband Brian for many years, but never had the chance to meet any of their three adorable children.  Their session was one of my all time favorites, and even though my style has evolved a good bit since then some of their photos still rank as some of my best.

glencairn garden portraitsI was so elated to get the opportunity to work with the Harris family again for some updated photos.  Since our last session their family has gone through a difficult time, dealing with middle son Evan’s devastating genetic disorder that caused him to have to have surgery after surgery.  Seeing them go through this struggle via social media, and how so many people in our community rallied together to support them was truly heart warming.  Thankfully Evan has come through on the other side of all of this as a fighter.  His recovery has been amazing and his spirit is so positive you can’t help but to smile when around him.  Little sister Riley was a natural in front of the camera, posing and giving her signature smile.  While big brother Brice is going to be a heart-breaker, and possibly a model, in the making.

I had such a great time catching up with them and seeing Evan’s progress, but aside from just writing about another session of mine I wanted to share their story, from their perspective.  So here, in the words of mother BJ, is their story…their testimony:

On Monday April 20, 2015, our son Evan was experiencing symptoms of a stomach virus; however, on Wednesday the 22nd, things changed drastically which resulted in Evan being admitted to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Preliminary tests detected lethal amounts of ammonia in Evan’s blood stream, which severely affected his nervous system and rendered him unresponsive for a period of time. After extensive testing, Evan was diagnosed with OTC deficiency. Ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency is an X-linked genetic disorder of the urea cycle that led to elevated levels of ammonia in the blood.  Due to the toxic levels of ammonia, Evan was faced with life threatening health issues.  We were told that “if” he survived, Evan would never be the same due to severe brain damage. We were told that it was very likely that our child would never walk, talk or think or function in a normal way.  As you can imagine, this was the most difficult thing our family had ever experienced.  Even after the recent loss of Brian’s mom and my dad, this hurt trounced upon like nothing we had ever experienced before.

During this time our little family was tested and stretched to the max but our hope was in God.  We couldn’t see a light at the end of the tunnel but we had faith that the light was there. We prayed, fasted and trusted God for a miracle but it didn’t come overnight.  Evan was hospitalized from April 22nd to June 15th.  During his stay, Evan underwent many surgeries and numerous tests. He also had to go through extensive therapy to learn to talk, swallow, chew, smile, walk, recognize colors, letters, use his fingers, hold his head up, etc.  Our family was in a storm.

This was such a tumultuous storm but as we approach the one year anniversary to this trying time in our life these pictures of our family remind us that God is a Healer!  It confirms in us that we MUST walk by faith and not by sight.  These pictures sanction in us that trials come that we may be strong.  We hope that the sight of the smiles across our faces reveal to you that weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. We hope that you see in our eyes through these pictures that we are overcomers and that you too can overcome any situation.
