Anita Is 40 + Fabulous!

Seeing another year of life is something that we all too often take for granted.  But in my opinion it’s something that should be celebrated to the fullest extent.  So anytime I get an email from someone looking to do a birthday session (for themselves, not their kids) I get giddy.  It let’s me know two things about my client.  First, they’re someone that lives their life to the fullest and warmly embraces getting another year older.  And second, I know they’re gonna be a lot of fun.  Birthday sessions are some of my favorite sessions because the entire time I spend with my client is a celebration.

This could definitely be said of Anita’s 40th birthday shoot.  Anita had a vision for her session and I was excited that she would include me in her plans.  The first half of her session featured her in a beautiful red gown that popped against the neutral toned woods where we began.  She was a trooper for rocking her heels on the dirt road and going along with me and her husband’s crazy shenanigans and poses.

The second half of her session took us to Old Town Rock Hill, SC.  A cute yellow peplum top, jeans and a bouquet of vibrant flowers were the perfect wardrobe and accessories to bring the quaint little backdrop to life.  I truly enjoyed my time with Anita and her husband.  I laughed the entire time and that’s always a good sign of a great session.  I hope she truly enjoyed her 40th celebration and am so thankful she allowed me to play a small role in it.

If you have an upcoming birthday that you want to celebrate I’d love to chat with you!  Let’s talk about how turning another year older is a blessing and deserves to make you feel your best.

Making  Your Cake Tasting Stress Free by Danetra Richardson

I have absolutely LOVED bringing you all fresh perspectives through my blog this year.  I hope you’ve enjoyed each and every one of my guest bloggers!  While this monthly guest blogger series comes to an end I hope to bring you more fresh perspectives in the future.   My final guest blogger for 2017 is Danetra Richardson of Swank Desserts based in beautiful Charleston, SC.  Danetra is a talented baker who I’ve had the pleasure of working with  for styled shoots.  Not only is her food gorgeous to look at, but it’s equally delicious.  If you’re an upcoming bride or groom then this blog post is just what you need for your upcoming wedding cake tastings.

  • Limit the amount of people you invite to your tasting

If you love sweets, the decision making process will already be difficult. Too many opinions can take away from the experience and make narrowing down flavor choices even more difficult. Think about what you and your partner want the most.

  • Let your baker know if anyone at your wedding has any food related allergies

  • Know what you want (or have a good idea) beforehand

Having a clear vision of your cake/desserts will not help you select the appropriate baker for your desired aesthetic, but it will also make your decision making process a lot easier and the tasting appointment flow more smoothly. Your baker will also be able to provide you with a more accurate quote.  Provide the baker with inspiration pictures BEFORE the appointment

  • Research prior to scheduling appointments.

This goes hand in hand with knowing what you want! All bakers have a different style and don’t do everything so be sure to look at their Facebook, Instagram,  and website to get an idea of what they DO offer. If you want fondant, you want to select a baker that is experienced in that area. Don’t be afraid to ask for their pricing if it isn’t available on their website. It is also important to read the reviews to ensure your baker is reputable.

  • Be honest and realistic about your budget

Cakes can take hours, sometimes days to create and seconds to eat! The cost of the cake will depend upon design, ingredients, and the experience of the baker. Wedding cakes are typically priced by the slice and the cost per slice will increase with a more elaborate design or pricier ingredients (i.e. nuts and fruit). Other costs associated with the cake that need to be taken into consideration are sales tax, delivery fees, and cake stand rental. It’s also a good idea to think about the décor that will be used on the cake table as well.

  • Have fun!

Your wedding is unique and your cake should reflect that. Think outside of the box and have fun when selecting flavors and design. I always suggest when selecting potential flavors, to pick a flavor that you normally wouldn’t. You might be pleasantly surprised.

  • Presentation

The cake table is a major focal point of your reception and a huge design element. I can’t tell you how many beautiful cakes I’ve had to set up on tables with wrinkled linens or tables tucked away in the back corner of the venue. Think about incorporating your florals and tablescape décor on your cake table.  Use Pinterest  or a  Google image search as inspiration.

  • Always remember that although dessert is the last course, it shouldn’t be treated as an afterthought. This is the last impression your guests have of your wedding. You don’t want to leave a bad taste in their mouth, literally. Ha!

You guys have heard me say over and over again how much I adore branding photography.  And I will probably keep saying it since I don’t see that changing anytime soon.  As I make the shift in my business to focus more on branding photography I’m excited to see what new solopreneurs I encounter.  Erica reached out to me earlier this year regarding a branding session and together we planned out her Old Town Rock Hill, SC shoot.  It was so much fun helping her decide on the perfect outfit that would not only look great on her, but help to bring her spirit and personality out in her images.  And can I just say that burgandy is definitely her color!

The McCray Family | Glencairn Garden Family Session

I met and worked with the McCray family early on a Sunday morning over the summer.  It was an unusually pleasant day for the Carolinas.  When you’re used to 80% humidity and 90 degree temps on any given summer morning you thank your lucky stars when neither of those factors exist.  It was a beautiful morning, but couldn’t compare to the McCray family themselves.  They made the drive from Florence, SC to little ol’ Rock Hill for their session and they did not come to play!  They stepped out of their car and I was immediately in love with their attire.  They looked so regal in their custom made wardrobe and the white was perfect for a summer session.  And the most miraculous part of all was that the kids managed to keep their outfits white throughout the entire shoot!

It was fun getting to know them and learning about their family as we made our way through the park.  It’s always nice as a photographer when you meet a family that you instantly click with.  It’s one thing to have an ongoing dialogue with someone via email, but once you meet them and you hit it off it just makes the rest of the session go so much more smoothly.  I had fun working with the little ones as well.  Whether it was showing me dance moves or giving each other hugs and kisses they seemed to enjoy their morning taking family photos.  I know these will be lasting memories that the McCray family will cherish for a long time to come.  If you’re looking to make some memories of your own with your loved ones I’d love to hear from you!  Contact me now so we can begin discussing your upcoming family session.

Find Your Passion

Being passionate about what you do is so important for every aspect of your life.  As we get older we tend to lose our passion as the day to day tasks of life take their toll on us.  Mundane and routine take over and passion somehow falls by the wayside.  I am a firm believer that to live a truly fulfilling life you need to find something that you love, that you can get excited about.  This month’s guest blogger is a fellow photograpHER, Victoria Blackshear, based in Charlotte, NC and I’m so excited that she found her passion in life and is letting you all know exactly how you can do the same!

My ultimate goal was to graduate from high school, go to college, and play volleyball. However, I began dating a really awesome football player during my junior year. Three years later, we were married and now we have two beautiful children.

With two small children, my lengthy day seems to never end. My laborious day begins with the the aroma of hazelnut coffee at 4:30 a.m. I then move hastily around my home to get myself and our children ready for school and out the house by 6:30 a.m. After the initial hustle and bustle, my work day begins at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m. I usually pick my children up around 5 p.m. after spending the interim time doing grocery shopping, cleaning, laundry, and preparing dinner. Once I pick up my kids in the the evening from after-school care, the nightly routine begins and we prep for the next day.

When my family goes to sleep, and the night grows quiet, my mind is still awake. I am wondering, “What did I accomplish today? Did it bring me happiness? What did I do for others? Lastly, I wonder, “Did it leave me passionate, on fire, and ready to try again?”

Two years ago, I received a phone call that changed my life. My father asked me, “What are you passionate about?” During my moment of total silence, I considered sharing my love for my family, the bond that my twin and I share, and my love for words. Instead, I inhaled and searched my heart, and exhaled the truth. My response to my father was that I loved photography, and all things beautiful. He responded by simply saying, “I’d like to help with that. Two weeks later I received a Canon Rebel T5 accompanied by two kit lenses.

That camera ignited a fire in my soul. Does that mean that my husband and children aren’t enough to keep me busy? Or that the ups and down of motherhood don’t wear me out? Absolutely not. It simply means that outside my daily routine of life, there lies a deeper passion within me, a gift. I believe that we all possess a gift, that if awakened, it could drastically change our lives. What becomes of our gifts: My answer…passion and purpose for life.

What is your passion? Passion is a feeling that sets your soul on fire. Passion keeps you up at night and wakes you up early. It is the very thing that your mind wanders to and lingers on during your down time.

Where is your passion?Passion is deep within. Though it may not be visible, your passion can be felt by others. When we do things with passion, we allow the world in, we allow that experience which makes us feel alive.

Photography is a lens by which I can view the world with a more loving eye. As I capture precious pictures for families, I am grabbing special moments in time and freezing them, so they can be rediscovered as memories fad. I am creating memories that will spark hours of long conversations around the coffee table.

When I photograph an infant’s finger, a pregnant mother’s fullness, and a college graduate’s excitement, a fire lying dormant in me sparks a flame.

Photography is my passion. If my passion is not touching lives, then what’s the point? Our passion was never meant to be bottled up and savored for ourselves. Passion is to be tapped into, expressed, and released. I am in my early thirties, in my 9th year of marriage, with an Undergrad and Masters degree wrapped tightly under my belt. However, I decided to be bold and to follow my passion. I decided to release my passion. My advice: Release your passion today.
