The Clyburn Family – Columbia, SC

The Clyburn Family – Columbia, SC

Last weekend I got the chance to spend time with my second family. I’ve known the Clyburns since the mid-90’s, when oldest daughter Kanitra and I became best friends. It basically meant we were attached at the hip and her family became my family and my family became hers. I’ve had the chance to get Kanitra, and her little sister Gabrielle, in front of my camera a few times, but this was the first time I was able to capture the entire Clyburn family.  The came to me last year regarding family Christmas photos so I told them we’d wait until 2015 when we had enough time to prepare for their session properly and get them their photos in enough time to be mailed out as holiday greeting cards.

I’m always overjoyed when families trust me to take their photos, especially when it’s the first time they’ve had any taken in years. And then to have your close friends trust you with that responsibility it means so much more. It’s a wonderful feeling to be supported in your dream by those closest to you.  And as I’ve mentioned before I love it when families come prepared to their sessions.  They were dressed fall appropriate and looked like they just stepped out of a catalog.  Great fall colors that coordinated well with one another.

Since Gabrielle is a current student at USC (and Kanitra is an alum) they thought this would be the perfect location for their fall photos. Lots of trees and clear skies provided a beautiful backdrop for their early morning session. I absolutely love shooting on campus and get excited each time a client requests to have their session there.  I had such a great time working with them (and Fergie – the dog) and I hope to capture many more wonderful memories for them in the future.

Your Responsibility As My Client

This past weekend I had a branding session with the amazingly talented Sirena of Aneris Photography (see awesome image above!) and it got me thinking about everything I had to do in order to prep for this shoot.  There’s a lot that  goes into making sure things turn out the way you want them to.  Of course you can never plan for hiccups along the way, but you can make sure that the majority of your session is a home run.  Here are a few tips to help you better prepare for your upcoming session:

Advanced Preparation:

After booking my appointment with Sirena (settling on a date, time and location) I had to begin making other appointments, namely a hair appointment a couple of weeks prior to my session because I wanted to dye it red (risky, I know + not something I would recommend unless you’re somewhat daring) and my makeup appointment.  After locking down those two items I began to think about the feel of my session.  I knew I wanted the first half to take place in my home so I wanted a cozy, comfortable feeling and the second half would be outdoors and I wanted to be a bit more dressed up for that.  Pinterest became my best friend at that point.  I created a board specifically for my session which included outfit ideas, color schemes and pose options (not necessarily doing exact poses, but to give me a feel for what I wanted my session to be like). I shared this board with my photographer so that she was aware of the vibe I was going for in advance.  Doing your own research, and not just relying on your photographer, will make your day run so much more smoothly.

Week of Preparation:

I knew I didn’t want to wait until the last minute to get things together (the stress is real during this time of the year for me so whatever I can do to alleviate it, I will) so I decided to start on getting my home set up early in the week.  This included vacuuming, straightening up, cleaning off tables and counters and de-cluttering.  Anything that I didn’t want in the background during the in-home portion of my session was stored away.  I also decided to iron my clothing a couple of days in advance and hang them up so that wasn’t something that needed to be done at the last minute.  Doing all of this before the day of my session even arrived allowed me to be as calm  as possibly could.

Session Day:

I made sure to get a good night’s sleep the night before and drink plenty of water so that my skin could be as glowy and blemish free as possible.  I made my appointment with MUA (make-up artist) Brenisha of Estilo by CX for early that morning so that I wouldn’t have to be in a rush coming or going that day.  She worked her magic as usual and it gave me enough time to get home, change into my first outfit, touch up my hair and start the session!  Having myself completely together made Sirena’s job easier.  She was able to come in and shoot without having to nitpick about certain things and gave her more shooting time which worked out better for the both of us.  And last but certainly not least…relax!  Being in front of the camera can be nerve-racking.  It was for me anyway.  So make sure to try to get as comfortable and relaxed as possible.  Throw on your favorite tunes prior to (or even during the session), sip some calming tea (or even have a glass of wine if that helps you to loosen up slightly) and have fun.

I hope reading through this list will give you, the client, a better feel for what your responsibilities are prior to your session.  I love that my clients have faith in me and my abilities but I’m not a magician.  I can’t make something great without your help.  My best sessions have come from clients that put their all into it as well.  Your session is a team effort and without your help we can’t make it as great as it deserves to be!  If you’re looking to book a session with me head on over to the Contact page and shoot me an email or give me a call.  I’d love to work with you and make a little magic!

The Biltmore Estate – Asheville, NC

The Biltmore Estate – Asheville, NC

This past weekend I was finally able to check another item off of my bucket list, visiting the Biltmore Estate during Christmas.  My first trip to Asheville, NC and the Biltmore took place in the spring of 2013 and while that was a great trip it poured rain almost the entire time, which didn’t make for good sight-seeing.  So it was nice to return to the Biltmore with my family and see it as it should be seen.

Because I can’t be just a tourist and I have to get a little creative (especially since the recent bad weather has kept me from being able to shoot).  I thought it would be unique (and also stunning) to do a few ring shots for my sister.  What better way to display her beautiful engagement ring than with the glorious estate as the backdrop.  I’m so glad she was up for the idea because the shots we got were amazing!

Although the weather was cold (make sure to dress warm if you’re planning to visit during this time of year), the day could not have been more beautiful!  There was not a single cloud in the sky the entire duration of our trip.  We started our day by touring the massive grounds, then moving to the inside of the estate (no photos allowed) which had Christmas decor in almost every single room, we visited the shops which were filled with Christmas gifts, had lunch at the Stable Cafe, did a little wine tasting and even saw Santa and carolers.  If you’re looking for something to do with your significant other or as a family I definitely encourage you to visit the Biltmore during the holidays.  If you love Christmas and everything it has to offer I promise you won’t be disappointed.

2015 Fall Mini Sessions Pt. 2

2015 Fall Mini Sessions Pt. 2

Last week I blogged about the first part of my 2015 Fall Mini Sessions (which you can read about here) and this week I’m wrapping up the second half of those sessions.

The second part of my sessions consisted of a large family broken up into two sessions.  Kanika, who attended the University of South Carolina with me, contacted me regarding a session for her, her husband and her four month old son.  After telling her sister Terry about my mini sessions, she then contacted me to set up a session for her family as well.  Let me tell you these were a great, great group of people to work with!  Kanika and her husband Izell were laid-back and fun.  They hadn’t had family photos taken since their son was born so it was nice to be able to be the chosen photographer.  Baby Tristan (whose name I absolutely adore!) came ready to smile!  Especially when we broke out the pumpkin prop that Kanika wanted in some of the photos.  His grin was from ear to ear and he wanted nothing more than to get his little hands on it.  Towards the end of their session Terry and her family arrived.  So we got in a couple of large group photos with both families and then moved onto The Fludd family.

I tend to work a lot with families with younger children so it was a nice change of pace to work with the all adult Fludd family.  Terry, her husband, her brother and two sons were such a pleasure to shoot.  Her sons had a lot of fun with the shoot!  Doing their best GQ model poses and having an all around great time in front of the camera.  At the end of the session both families even helped me wrap everything up and load it up into my car.

To say that my 2015 Fall Mini Sessions were a hit is an understatement!  I had an amazing time working with each of these families and I am already anticipating next year’s sessions!

2015 Fall Mini Sessions Pt. 1

2015 Fall Mini Sessions Pt. 1

This past weekend my eagerly anticipated Fall Mini Sessions took place!  I love mini sessions because it allows me to fit more clients into my busy fall schedule and I usually get the opportunity to work with some great, new clients.  This year did not disappoint!  I opted to do things a little differently to give my clients a bit of a new experience.  Typically my minis take place at the beautiful Glencairn Garden in Rock Hill, SC, but this year I opted to switch things up so I moved the sessions to a wonderful farm in Fort Mill, SC.  I knew the background would be gorgeous since I’d shot at this location a couple of times previously.  The leaves were beginning to change colors on the trees and it made for the perfect backdrop for fall.

My first two session of the morning, which I’ll be highlighting in today’s post featured two families that I had the opportunity to work with before.  First up was the Robinson Family.  Last Christmas I shot only Logan and Caden (the two youngest Robinsons), but this year the entire family got in on the action.  Mom, Adrienne, indicated that they haven’t had family photos taken in years so I was honored they would choose me as their photographer for capturing such a wonderful time in their lives.  They were great to work with and Adrienne had everyone looking fabulous!

My second session of the day was with the Cureton Family.  Mom, Shay, has been a staple during my mini sessions for the last 3 years in a row.    But once again this was the first time her and dad participated in the session.  Before then it was just adorable little Arrianna.  It’s been amazing to watch Arrianna grow in front of my camera and each year she’s as sweet and photogenic as ever!  Having worked with Shay’s sister and her family earlier in the year I must say they have the most beautiful and well-behaved children!  I keep telling them modeling is in their future.  I look forward to working with Shay and her family for many years to come!

Stay tuned for the remaining mini sessions next week!
