Isle of Palms Getaway 2015

Isle of Palms Getaway 2015

This past weekend I took a mini vacation with some girlfriends (each of us graduates of the University of South Carolina) to the beautiful Isle of Palms, SC.  It was a much needed trip to get in some relaxation before my busy fall shooting season begins.  This was truly a restful vacation for me.  Nothing too tedious on the agenda and it was filled with so much laughter that I’m still working on getting my voice back completely.

We spent our mornings cooking breakfast filled with delicious items like quiche, waffles, sausage roll-ups, bacon, french toast casserole, bellinis, etc.  Our afternoons were spent relaxing watching films in the movie room or lounging poolside.  And our evenings were a mix of dinner plans, a mixology tour and partying at the house.

The entire trip was filled with memorable hashtags (#davidruffin #youaintbiggerthanthegroup #riceandcabbage #unbothered) that I’m sure we’ll laugh at for years to come.  It was definitely a trip to remember and one I will look back on fondly.  And in a few weeks when I’m stressed out from the craziness that is the fall season I’ll be able to remember this vacation and I’m hoping it will bring a smile to my face and help me to calm myself.  I’m already eagerly anticipating the next one…

James Family Session – Rock Hill, SC

James Family Session – Rock Hill, SC

Over Labor Day weekend I managed to get a couple of family sessions in at beautiful Glencairn Garden in Rock Hill, SC.  I love bringing families from out of town there because they never expect everything the park has to offer.  From a waterfall, to a pond, lots of greenery and open fields.  There’s truly something there for everyone.  I was excited to work with my cousin Nadia and her family to finish up my weekend of shooting.  This date was rescheduled due to rain canceling out our prior session, but things couldn’t have worked out better.  Their session took place late on a Sunday evening as the sun was beginning to set.  Not only did it make for some gorgeous lighting, but it also helped keep the temperature down a little.  And at this point in September we will take what we can get down south!

The James Family were laid back and had fun with their session which I always love.  And thankfully after Aidan letting us know that he was not in the mood to be overly affectionate with his parents at the beginning of our session he was geared up and ready to finish the session off strong.  The help of wildlife in the park (including a crane – at least I assume that’s what it was – and some very large koi fish) helped to re-energize him and get him excited about taking more photos.

They’re a picture perfect family and I’m glad that I was able to work with them after not having had family portraits taken in quite some time.  These memories will last them a lifetime and I look forward to working with them for many years to come.

There’s no better time for you to book your family session than during the wonderful fall season.  Contact me today to book your session!

Cureton Family Session – Rock Hill, SC

Cureton Family Session – Rock Hill, SC
Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting and working with the Cureton Family for their first family session in years! I know I always say it, but I’m truly honored when families choose me to photograph them after not having a portrait session in years.  It is truly a humbling feeling.
I’d met Zandria’s 7 year old son , Zamir, last year during my Fall Mini Sessions when he took photos alongside his little cousin, but this was my first time meeting the entire family.  Zandria and I managed to make this entire session come together within just one week!  Once we settled on the beautiful Glencairn Garden as our backdrop everything else came together in a breeze.
I love it when people come prepared for their family sessions and bring prop items that are unique to them.  Along with a comfy blanket for baby Zavi, Zandria also brought along letters to represent the children’s names as well as toy trains, which happen to be one of Zamir’s favorite toys.  And can we just talk about Zamir for a minute?!  Aside from just being an overall really nice, well mannered kid, I think he may just be a model in training!  He moved so naturally in front of the camera.  I noticed it last year during his first session with me, but he simply stood out during this session.  And he seems to love being a big brother as well.  He loved holding little Zavi while mom and dad were taking photos.  He made sure to be very careful and gentle with him.
Zandria indicated wanting to hang these photos up on her ‘family tree’ wall and I know that project will turn out wonderful!  I’m so happy to have had the chance to work with this family and to be able to create memories they will share for a lifetime.

Office Makeover Project!

Home Office Makeover Project

So let me preface this blog post by saying I have absolutely no before photos to show you.  I know.  That sucks.  I never think to do before photos until I’m halfway through a project I’m working on.  I have to get better at that.  But I will give you a brief description so you can imagine what it looked like prior to me updating it.

I moved into my home back in the fall of 2010.  At that time I was not a photographer so my second bedroom was just that.  A spare bedroom.  I had a cheap, black and silver desk with matching chair that my aunt had gifted me.  A dark brown bookcase from Ikea, a small brown wicker side table and black and silver futon.  The room was just to be practical in case I had company that needed a spare room for the night and in case I wanted to hop onto my computer to search something online.

When I became a photographer I noticed myself spending more and more time in this room.  Editing photos, putting together packages, etc.  And I was uninspired.  I would look at beautiful office spaces on Pinterest and dream about what my office could be.  So in 2014 I decided it was time to make a change.  I knew I wanted a light and airy space.  Something simple and clean that would make me feel excited to work in this area.  I began pinning different office spaces that inspired me and did online research to figure out where to make my purchases from.

My first upgrade was my desk.  Luckily my sister was in the process of searching for a house and moving and she needed a desk.  So I bought my beautiful white desk from Ikea and gave my sister my old one.  If you’ve ever purchased anything from Ikea before you know it can be a headache to put it all together yourself, but late one evening that’s exactly what I did.  And I was in love!

Next up was painting my brown wicker side table with gold paint.  There’s just something about gold and white together that is such a classic look.  So at that time I decided that’s what I wanted the theme of my office to be: All White Everything + Hints of Gold.  Next up was creating my vision board which I love and change constantly as things get checked off.  I found the perfect white chair online to accompany my desk.  And a simple white frame surrounding a photo that reads ‘He Will Fulfill Every Promise’ in gold lettering finishes off that portion of the room.

My vision was coming together in a beautiful way, but two large eyesores stood out.  The black futon and dark brown bookcase.  About 2 months ago I gave away the futon to my parents for their guest bedroom.  They needed one and I desperately wanted that one out of my house.  I came across a few white futons that I loved, but this white and gray chevron print futon caught my attention and would not let it go!  So after a few weeks of deliberating I made the purchase.  It was perfect!  It added a little something different to the room.  Gold polka dot pillows from Etsy were the perfect match to the futon.  So now the final task was the bookcase.  I consider myself to be a pretty handy and crafty person so instead of purchasing a white bookshelf, which I easily could’ve done, I opted to paint it instead.  This task turned out not to be as easy as expected, but after a few days of painting, one too many trips to the paint store and many, many small cans of chalk and regular flat paint later I was finished!

To see my vision come to life after a year has been nothing short of awesome!  I absolutely love my new work space.  As corny as this sounds, I will go into that room and just sit in it because it makes me so incredibly happy.  Not only is the room functional, but it makes me want to work.  If you’re stuck in front of a computer editing photos for hours on end you should be in a place that makes you want to work.  If you work from home I encourage you to do the same.  Make yourself a happy space in your home.  A place that puts you at ease and energizes you at the same time.  It’s made a world of difference for me already and I’m sure it will do the same for you!

Reed Family Session – Matthews, NC

Reed Family Session – Matthews, NC

I’m always excited to work with family and friends for their family portrait sessions.  I’ve known Danielle and her family for years.  Dating back to high school (which I won’t divulge exactly how many years ago that was), so when she asked me to capture family portraits during her parent’s 40th wedding anniversary celebration weekend I was elated to see them all and meet the new additions to their family.

We met at their family home bright and early on a Sunday morning and even though I had visited their home in many, many years ago  I was seeing it again for the first time through a photographer’s eye.  Not only is their home immaculate on the inside, the outside is just as beautiful!  We had several different backdrops to work with which is a photographer’s dream.  I was able to get great shots of each individual family, the children as well as a few group shots of everyone.  We were working for time since rain was in the forecast and even though we had a few sprinkles here and there we managed to finish up right in time.

It was a true pleasure working with the Reed Family for their family session.  I’m always thankful when someone books me, especially if it’s been years since they’ve had family portraits taken.  For anyone to choose me for their first time in front of the camera as a complete family unit is a job that I do not take lightly.  And I want to make it as pleasurable an experience as possible for everyone involved.  I hope the Reeds and their extended families enjoyed their time with me and I’m forever grateful for them allowing me to come into their home and capture these lasting memories.  I hope looking back at these images they’ll remember a time filled with lots of love and happiness.
