Prepping Your Home For A Lifestyle Session

Have you ever considered doing an in-home lifestyle session, but didn’t think your home was photograph well?  In a world where we’re constantly bombarded with perfectly curated images and picture perfect living spaces it’s no wonder many feel that way.  But I’m here to tell you your home doesn’t have to look like it came straight out of HGTV in order to be captured beautifully.  Here are 5 tips to get your house photoshoot ready!

  1. Choose 2-3 spaces in your home that you will use for your shoot and focus on those rooms only.  Trying to get yourself, your family and your house together for a shoot can be overwhelming so my best advice to focus your photoshoot on just 2-3 spaces.  This eliminates you having to tidy up the entire house and makes things easier on you.  For a branding session you may want to focus on your home office, living room and/or bedroom.  For a newborn family session you’ll want most of the shoot to take place in the nursery, bedroom and/or living room.  The rooms you choose are up to you, but keeping it confined to just a few spaces makes it easier for everyone involved.
  2.  Lighting is key.  Once you’ve figured out which rooms you’ll be shooting in begin to pay attention to when those rooms get the best lighting.  You’ve more than likely never paid attention to which side of the house gets the most sun during certain parts of the day, but now is the time to start tracking that.  If you’re opting to shoot in multiple rooms it’s very likely that they all won’t get great lighting at the same time so just focus on the room(s) you’ll be doing the majority of the shoot in and plan for the best light in that room.  Before your photographer arrives open up all the curtains and blinds to allow for as much natural light as possible.
  3.  Tidy up everything you don’t want visible in your images.  And don’t wait until the last minute to do this!  3-5 days before your shoot go ahead and vacuum, dust, mop and do any deep cleaning that’s necessary and then 1-3 days before go ahead and put away any objects you don’t want visible.  These items could include toys, remote controls, random shoes, paperwork, etc.  If there’s even a chance the photographer may capture it go ahead and put it away.  You don’t want to have to come back to your photographer after the fact and ask them to do a ton of cropping.
  4. Consider making upgrades prior to your session.  I’m by no means telling you to go out and purchase new furniture, but if this is the excuse you needed then go for it!  But small, inexpensive upgrades can help to create a more visually appealing images.  Small upgrades can include new artwork for your walls, replacing your comforter set with one that’s light and airy, pillows with pops of color to freshen up your space, a cozy blanket to drape over your couch to give it a more cozy feel, etc.  Trolling the aisles of Ross, Home Goods, Marshalls, Target, etc can give you great ideas without spending a ton of money.
  5. Match your wardrobe to your surrounding area.  No, I don’t mean go out and buy all neutral colors because your home is decorated in neutral tones, I mean keep things casual.  Your home is your sanctuary.  It’s the space where you unwind, relax and feel most comfortable and your wardrobe should reflect that.  So put away the high heels and the evening gown.  And there’s no need to make the kids put on their Sunday best.  An in-home lifestyle session should showcase what your family looks like on a daily basis.  Don’t skip the hair and makeup appointment, but just have them go with a more subdued look.  Don’t throw on your old college tee that has a million pizza stains on it and your husband’s jogging pants because that’s what you normally wear at home, but put on that comfy tee that’s fitted, but still looks great on you with a pair of nice jeans and a cardigan.  You want to look put together, but not too done up.

How Are You Using Your Branding Images?

denise benson photography

Throughout my years a photographer I’ve done many a branding session.  It’s honestly my favorite type of session to work on because I love helping another business bring their brand to life through their visuals.  But all too often I see people not using their branding images correctly or worst case scenario, not using them at all.  After having a couple of my own branding sessions and utilizing those images across all of my platforms (website, marketing materials, social media) consistently, I want to share a few tips on how you can maximize your image’s potential and get the most bang for your buck!

  • If you’re having to select a few images from your photographer and can’t afford to purchase them all make your selections diverse.  Choose photos that show a range of emotions (laughing, serious, smiling, etc) and a range of motions (standard headshots, working, behind the scenes, etc).  That way you have enough variety to share over the course of time and you’re not posting images that look exactly alike.
  • Make sure your photographer takes plenty of photos of your face.  The images that get the most likes on my Instagram account are of me so I make sure to post my face at least every 9 posts.  It let’s your audience know who you are and they have a face to go along with the brand.
  • Space your images out.  I know you get excited to share your images once you get them back from your photographer, but resist the urge to post them all immediately. Instead space out your posts over the course of a few weeks or even months.  That way you have fresh content and you’re not having to repost the same images over and over again.
  • Use your images EVERYWHERE!  Don’t stop at just your social media.  Even though that’s likely where most of your photos will be posted don’t neglect your website and marketing materials.  Your About Me page on your website is a great place to display a few of your images so that potential clients get a good feel for who you are and when sharing brochures, pamphlets,  client holiday cards and other marketing materials it’s always great to share a professional image of yourself as well.

If you’re paying to have a professional photoshoot then you need to make the most of all of your images.  Keeping them hidden away is pointless so share those images and use them over and over again.  You’ll feel like you got your money’s worth with your photographer and your photographer will be happy that you’re utilizing your product.  And if you’re looking to update your branding visuals I’d love to chat with you!  Contact me today so we can begin planning your session.

At the end of 2017 I decided to something a little different for the start off the new year. I decided I wanted to help entrepreneurs with their branding visuals. The beginning of a new year always feels like a fresh start and what better time to get updated images for your business. That’s when the idea of doing a headshot special came to mind. I know after the holidays a lot of bank accounts can be drained and someone that works for themselves may not have the time or money to invest in a full branding session right at the beginning of a new year, but a quick mini session to give you just enough images to get started may be just the thing your business needs. So the $100 Headshot Event was formed and I decided to put it out into the universe and see what happens. And the response was overwhelming! To date this may be the best photography special I’ve ever put out. Over the next several weeks I’ll be showcasing each of the amazing brands, who all happen to be amazing women of color (#blackgirlmagic), right here on my blog so make sure to stop by each Monday.

My first session was with Kimberly of Innercoms, a writing and communications firm based in Charlotte, NC.  Kimberly is a Senior Writer and Communications Consultant and helps clients improve their marketing and influence, and provides services that have secured over $4 million in funding and awards to date.  Her session took place in Old Town, Rock Hill, SC on a very chilly morning, but she came ready to give it her all!  We had a great time getting to know one another during our short time together and her entire spirit just gave off such great energy!  I’m excited to see where her business goes now that she’s based in North Carolina.  And if you’re a business owner that needs help with copy, marketing, public relations and/or web content definitely check her out!  You can find her online on the following platforms:

My first in-person coaching session was with Michelle of Deeply Rooted Photography based in Danville, VA.  When Michelle reached out to me and indicated where she was from I assumed she planned to do an online coaching session, but she actually wanted the hands on experience so I was thrilled when she decided to make the trip to Rock Hill, SC to meet with me in person.  We spent the afternoon focusing on editing and shooting techniques and even took some time out to go outside and practice shooting together.  At the end of our afternoon together I was so glad that she felt like she got the right tools to help propel her business forward.  I’m excited to see where her business takes her from here!

If you’re considering either an in-person or online coaching session I would love to chat with you.  An in-person session includes a 2 hour ‘Pick Your Brain’ session where we discuss any topic related to photography that you may have and in-field training where you can choose between shadowing me on a future shoot or spending an hour together after the Pick Your Brain session where we shoot together and I help you hone your craft.  The online coaching session consists of the two hour Pick Your Brain session.  Both programs get you exclusive access to my private Facebook group for just my coaching clients as well as a workbook.  Contact me today if you’d like more information!

Sometimes you see someone from afar and wonder what their story is and then you finally meet them and get to know them and it’s not at all what you were expecting.  So goes the story of me meeting Robyn.  Robyn attends the same church as I do, Elevation – Rock Hill and I would see her occasionally on Sundays during the worship experience, but I never spoke to her until she joined my small group (known as eGroups at Elevation) in 2016.  She’s funny, quirky and has a really big heart.  When I learned that she worked in the creative field as an event coordinator and was looking to start back up under her own brand, Vivid Detail Event Design I could tell this was something she was truly passionate about.  She then reached out to me to help her with a styled wedding shoot idea she had in mind.  Although there were hiccups along the way (when is there not with a styled shoot?) everything turned out beautifully and was well executed.  If you missed that post I encourage you to check it out after finishing this post, of course.

So that brings us to the point of her branding session.  Robyn’s personality is fun and I’m so glad she brought that side of herself to her session.  She showed up in pigtail buns, a camo jacket and sneakers so I knew the vibe she wanted was nothing that took herself too seriously.  She lives her life in color, just like her brand name Vivid Details says.

At the end of her session I had her daughter get in on some of the fun as we finished up with some yummy macarons courtesy of Amelie’s French Bakery.  I love sessions where clients want to try new things and enjoy themselves so this has to be one of my favorite sessions of all time.  If you’re in need of some updated images that show off your personality I’d love to chat with you.  Contact me today so we can discuss your next session!
