6 Reasons Photographers Should Hustle To Have Their Work Published

jessica hunt guest blog post

This month’s guest blogger is Jessica Hunt of Jessica Hunt Photography.  We became social media friends a while back, but had the opportunity to meet in person during the Queen Photographers Workshop this year.  Jessica is a beaming ball of energy and has great insight in to getting your work published.  If you’re a photographer that is wanting to know more about publishing your images then this article is for you!

6 Reasons Photographers Should Hustle To Have Their Work Published

1. Having a wedding or session published enhances your client’s experience with you and your brand.

Can you think of a better compliment for a couple than an email saying that their big day has been selected for publication? No? Me either!! Imagine your couple’s joy when they find out all of their hard work and planning is being rewarded by a publication’s selection. Not only will they be overjoyed at the prospect of their day and love being shown-off by a publication, but they will also be even more impressed with their photographer and level of service provided by their tog after seeing themselves up on, as some would say, the big screen.

2. Getting published gives your work and brand exposure beyond your own platforms and circles of influence.

Getting published on various publications and locations throughout the internet is not only a compliment and flattering for you, but it also allows more and different eyes to see your work than your own social media would. Nailing publications on blogs that have large, active followings can help you grow your own tribe of supporters outside your personal sphere of influence, and could possibly put your work and style in front of potential clients you would have otherwise never been able to reach.

3. Being published creates marketing opportunities for your business.

Wondering what to boost on Facebook or what to show off as your accolades for your business? Well, wonder no further my friend, because getting published is the answer. Once you get published, you can craft ads or boosted posts that show off your accomplishment and work to potential clients. You will be able to establish yourself as a published professional photographer with a click of a button to either potential clients, other photographers, and anyone who visits your website or social media channels.

4. Showing off your list of publications impresses prospective clients and establishes you as a trusted professional in their eyes from the jump.

Getting published is not easy or a cake-walk, so when prospective clients can easily find proof of your publications, your work and brand immediately come across to them as more valuable and exclusive. In our current wedding industry, brides are now looking for published photographers to hire because they have hopes of having their own day published or featured. So, showing these prospective clients from the jump that you have what it takes to be published immediately puts you at an advantage.

5. Publications help to establish your brand and work as publication-worthy and therefore more desirable.

Everyone wants the best when they purchase something. Whether it’s the best version of the iPhone or the BEST wedding photographer, clients are looking for what they think (or have been convinced) is the best fit for their needs. So, when you’ve been published more times than any of the other photographers in your market, you’re displaying to every prospective client that you are the BEST; the best photographer for them and the best choice for their wedding day.

6. Being published has MAJOR SEO benefits!

Most clients use search engines to find their wedding vendors, so having strong backlinks to your site and a good domain authority are incredibly important for your success in this realm of business. For every publication you earn, your site will gain a strong, appropriate backlink which will in turn increase your spot in search-term rankings. SEO is a huge and complicated monster to tackle as a business owner, I get it, but if you start out of the gate gaining backlinks from publications and raising your domain authority in this way, you’ll be ten steps ahead of the other guy.

Boho Forest Styled Wedding Shoot

Styled shoots are always a lot of fun for me.  They’re also a lot of hard work.  I try to do only do one per year because it can be such a taxing process, but it’s always worth the effort.  When Robyn of Vivid Detail Event Design reached out to me for her first styled shoot I was definitely on board.  I knew she wanted to put her mark on the event industry and I was more than happy to lend a hand and shed some light on what exactly a styled shoot entails.

She came up with the bohemian theme and I told her about one of my favorite places to shoot, a patch of woods off the side of a dirt road that makes for some of the most beautiful background scenery in my images.  Between the two of us we secured an amazing list of vendors that helped us put this day together.  Sometimes it seems like all odds are against you and that definitely happened during the time leading up to this shoot.  Literally everything that could go wrong did go wrong.  But if I’ve learned anything from working in this industry it’s that you have to roll with the punches + stay positive because in the end things WILL work out.  And boy did they!  This shoot turned out beautifully.  Our team of creatives truly made magic that day and I’m so thankful I was able to be a part of it all.  To top it all off we were recently featured by Catalyst Wedding Co which was the icing on an already pretty sweet cake.  I hope I’ll get the opportunity to work with these creatives again in the future because as a team we made something absolutely beautiful!

Tracey M. | Charlotte, NC Branding Session

So here’s a little backstory on my branding session with Tracey Massey of Living My Empowered Life.  Tracey and I initially met a few years ago when I was fresh into the photography game.  She reached out to me again in 2016 regarding her business and needing some updated images.  We began to plan for a session during the fall in scenic Charleston, but then life happened, as it sometimes does.  We finally managed to work things out for a spring session in Charlotte which I felt like was perfect for Tracey since she lives and works in the Queen City.

After having to reschedule a couple of times previously I had every body part imaginable crossed, hoping that the weather would cooperate with our early morning shoot.  Of course the odds were against us yet again and by the time I met up with her the sky opened and the rain fell.  Thank goodness we had a backup plan in the works!  The first part of her branding session took us indoors and just as we began to wrap things up Mother Nature decided to finally give us a break.  The rain went away, the sun came out and a beautiful breeze began to blow.  It was almost as if everything was aligning for this day to turn out perfectly.  We had a great time making our way to a local park in uptown Charlotte, NC.  Since the rain had just cleared up the area wasn’t overcrowded and for the most part it was just us and the goose family.  I’m already looking forward to working with Tracey in the future and am excited to see where her career takes her.  If you’re interested in a life coach or in the upcoming Living My Empowered Life Recharge Retreat taking place August 18-20, 2017 then definitely check her out!  And if you would like to discuss a branding session of your own please contact me.  I’d love to hear from you!

QP Workshop 2017

QP Workshop 2017

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the Queen Photographers Workshop.  This was the second annual workshop for The Queen Photographers and while last year’s event was awesome, these ladies really outdid themselves for 2017.  The two day workshop took place in picturesque Asheville, NC and was filled with lots of networking, learning and best of all…laughter!

A few of the Queens got together and rented out a house for the weekend and that’s where the adventure began for me.  I was the second attendee to arrive at our beautiful estate on Friday evening and I couldn’t imagine a more scenic venue to spend my weekend in.  Our house was nestled in the mountains of North Carolina that looked almost like a scene out of The Sound of Music.  And Kristen of Lavish Moments Photography can vouch for the fact that I twirled through our front yard singing “The Hills Are Alive With The Sound of Music.”  Once the rest of our housemates arrived we communed in the kitchen while Kim of Kim Craven Photography whipped us up an amazing seafood pasta dinner while we danced, sipped on some wine and just had a genuinely fun time together.

Saturday was our first official day for the workshop and I learned so much!  The day started out with a panel discussion featuring top industry leaders like Tara Ruby, Kesha Williams, Candice Johnson, Tomayia Colvin and Margaux Weinstock.  The keynote speaker for the afternoon was Alrinthea Carter of Southern Philter and hearing her speak on rural exploration photography was truly fascinating!  We broke for lunch and then ended our day with various workshops including a content planning course hosted by Jeanette Brewster, putting together workflows with Sarajane Case, and studio lighting techniques with Kim Craven Photography.  Our Saturday ended back at our estate where we had Kickback With The Queens where the rest of the attendees were invited back to our home for pizza, games and good times.

Our Sunday did not go as originally planned.  We woke up to downpours and considering we had an outdoor styled shoot scheduled for later that afternoon it did not make for a happy morning, but when creatives come together we can make magic regardless of the conditions.  We headed back to Mojo Coworking, where our workshop was held, and had an early morning meditation and yoga session with Jamie Fleming-Dixon.  It was much needed for everyone I’m sure!  The day then kicked off with Tyler J. McCall discussing Instagram and how to convert your followers into fans and we wrapped up classes with Jessica Hunt Photography discussing how to turn a $100 wedding into a $10,000 wedding.  After finishing up a Mojo we headed back to the estate where our amazing team of styled shoot vendors and models were ready for 3 various shoots!  Although it rained we came out with some amazing images!  I truly had a wonderful time with these ladies (and a couple of gentlemen) and am already anticipating #QPWorkshop2018!!  Check out my images from the styled shoot (along with some behind the scenes shots) as well as my video recap of our weekend.

Who Said? | Guest Post By Robin Danielle

robin danielleWho Said?

Whenever I try something new and I question myself on whether I can do it, I counter it with WHO SAID? – as in, who said I can’t?

  • When you look in the mirror; that is your competition.
  • When you feel like you can’t do something; it’s because you’ve told yourself that you can’t do it.

No one can hold you back but YOU so as long as your heart and mind say YES, then when doubt tries to kick in and tell you no, counter it with WHO SAID? It took me some years to embrace my true passion as an Author. I had been pursuing a future as a doctor; graduated from college with a degree in Biology and interned in Science labs. Throughout my life I always wrote – stories, poems, and thoughts for no reason in particular other than the mere fact that it felt better to have the thoughts on paper than clogging up my head since I had so many ideas.

The career as a doctor didn’t pan out for me but as I see it now, it was for a good reason. While I am still largely interested in natural health and preventive care, my passion and what keeps me up at night is writing. But I couldn’t be a writer/author, could I? My background was in science and I had no formal education in writing. The doubt and fear of what others would think and if I’d be taken seriously with my new found profession initially siked me out, but my passion was calling me so I countered with – WHO SAID?

When I re-launched my brand and did my photo-shoot with Denise Benson Photography, I remember being totally excited about the upcoming shoot but also anxiously nervous of how my photos would turn out. I don’t find myself to be very photogenic and I have one pose, hands on hip, which has been my go to since I was a teen. I wanted my photos to portray the “fearless still learning about business and herself” author that I am, but feared that my deer caught in headlights look would come out instead.

On the morning of the shoot it didn’t help that everything that could go wrong for me did while getting ready, including being late from traffic for my shoot. Denise was amazing and her calm demeanor helped to calm down the train wreck that was trying to happen. My photo shoot was excellent and my photos were even more beautiful than I had expected. It perfectly displayed the businesswoman I am now, and the person in my pictures is definitely a person that would counter doubt with WHO SAID?

I’m proud to have published three books and have more to come by pushing through my fears. Doubt will always rear its head, especially when you compare yourself to others, so don’t! These feelings keep you humble but they will also keep you stagnant if you don’t push past it. People, places and things have been positioned in your life to help you get to where you are and where you need to be. Don’t take your interactions for granted or the desires placed upon your heart to pursue your dreams. You’ll regret not doing those things you want in life more than you will if you try something and it doesn’t work out the way you’d like…the first time around.

Success cannot be quantified as a simple definition that is a standard for everyone. Success means different things to many people. So set your own goals and work on obtaining them as you continually stretch yourself to higher and higher standards. When doubts come, and they will, counter it with WHO SAID? Because, YOU CAN.
