Jaylene T. | Charlotte Branding Session
January is possibly my favorite month for sessions.  No, it’s not because it’s my birthday month or because I absolutely love cold weather.  But I love it so much because branding photography is where my heart truly lies and for the entire month of January I work with nothing but brands.  For the last two years I’ve dedicated January as my time to focus on working with business owners, entrepreneurs, fellow creatives and people needing to update their headshots.  January is the first month of the year and people are typically focused on starting the new year off right so why not get your business visuals in order too!

Jaylene of Trivino Law PLLC found me via Instagram and reached out regarding a branding session for her law firm.  She specializes in criminal defense, divorce and traffic tickets and is based out of Charlotte, NC.  We met on a cold, COLD and windy morning but she came ready to put in work.  Jaylene is bubbly, fun to be around and up for a challenge.  I’m so excited to see where her business  takes her in 2019 and beyond and am so thankful that she trusted me with her brand vision.

Charmekia B. | Rock Hill Branding Session

I finished out my 2018 branding sessions with Charmekia Bias of CharMarie Photography.  She and I met a couple of years ago at one of the Queen Photographer meet-ups that I used to host.  From the minute that she arrived she immediately fit in!  Her personality is that of a person who never met a stranger.  Her laugh is infectious and her personality is that of someone you just want to have in your space.  So when she reached out to me regarding a branding session I was ecstatic!  I love working with fellow photographers and I knew that she was going to be laid-back and fun.

Charmekia arrived at her session dolled up by my favorite Charlotte makeup artist, Whitney Elise and we immediately got to work snapping away in Old Town, Rock Hill, SC.  Our time together went by so quickly and just as I knew Charmekia would make my job very easy.  The sun glowed against her skin and made an already amazing session even better!

I’m so glad Charmekia chose me to be a part of her brand by capturing some truly beautiful portraits of her.  And since she’s a wonderful photographer herself I urge you to visit her website to see her work.  She’s a true baby whisperer, but don’t visit her page unless you’re okay with coming away with slight baby fever.  And if you’re a photographer, or other creative/entrepreneur, in need of updated branding images then I’d love to hear from you!  Feel free to contact me today so that we can begin planning your business visuals.

The Melanin + Light Shop

The Melanin + Light Shop
Towards the end of 2018, Kristen of K Marie Photography and I told the world about the Melanin + Light workshop. It was something we’d worked on for months hoping other photographers would find a need for it.  The Melanin + Light workshop was created for the purpose of helping other photographers learn how to better photograph and edit their black and brown clientele, a need we felt was really necessary.  After coming up with the concept we decided that our name and logo was pretty cute and that others may be interested in purchasing apparel.  So we began doing our research and the Melanin + Light shop was created!
The Melanin + Light shop has apparel and accessories for everyone!  It is NOT photographer specific.  I was created to celebrate ALL things melanin!  We currently have tees, sweaters and mugs but more items are being added to the shop on a regular basis.  To stay abreast of specials we are running on our merchandise or to see what items are being added next make sure to follow both myself and Kristen on Instagram:
And to shop the Melanin + Light collection now head on over to the following site and make sure to tag us in your social media images and use the hashtag #melaninandlight so we can share your photos!

Sha B. | Class of 2019

Sha B. | Class of 2019
I seriously can’t believe that my cousin Sha is going to be graduating from college this year.  I still think of her as the tiny little girl in the white dress during Sunday morning church service.  Shooting this session made me feel really old, but also really, REALLY proud.  She’s blossomed into such a wonderful young woman and even though I question her school of choice (she’s a soon to be Clemson grad and I’m a Carolina alum) I am so happy to see her accomplish this goal.

Her session took place on a beautiful fall morning at Glencairn Garden and along with the help of my sister, Olivia, we made our way through the quiet park stopping to capture her against the gorgeous fall foliage.  Glencairn Garden was somewhere I used to shoot all the time in the beginning of my photography career and I had become burned out from visiting that location one too many times.  It was nice to be able to come back to my ‘old stomping grounds’ after not having shot here for months and see it again with fresh eyes.  If  you’re in the Rock Hill area I definitely suggest you stop by for a visit.  While it’s beautiful in the spring time with all of the flowers and trees in full bloom, there’s much to be said for it during the fall as well.  The green grass mixed in with the burnt orange and fiery red leaves makes for a stunning background for any photo session.

I’m thankful that Sha chose me to help her commemorate this important time in her life and I know she will be going on to do wonderful things in the future.  And if you’re a college (or high school) senior looking to capture your final year then I’d love to hear from you!  Feel free to contact me today so we can begin planning your session.

2018 Fall Mini Sessions

denise benson photography2018 Fall Mini Sessions

My mini sessions only come around once a year, each fall, and it’s been a great way for me to be able to fit in more clients to what is typically a very busy season for me.  This past fall I had four mini sessions that included families, branding and even a life celebration session.  From start to finish it was a blast and I’m already eagerly anticipating this year’s sessions.  If you want to be the first to hear about them then make sure to sign up for my DBP VIP Newsletter.  Newsletter subscribers get first notice and dibs on booking their mini session slot!
First up for my mini’s is my great aunt Plumie.  She recently celebrated her 97th birthday and her family thought a session with me would be a great way to commemorate it.  It was a cold morning, but I made sure to be able to capture a few images of her that conveyed her beauty, strength and determination.  She’s the last living great aunt that I have on either side of my family and I am so incredibly blessed that I could do this for her and her children.  I know these images of her will be cherished for many, many years to come!

The Mead family recently welcomed baby Zoe into their lives and decided to use my fall mini sessions as a way to capture their loving unit.  I had the pleasure of attending Alyssa and Paul’s wedding a few years back as a guest so it was a nice full circle moment to be able to capture their entire family as they embark on this new journey.  I can’t wait to see how baby Zoe grows and I hope to be able to capture more sessions for them in the years to come.

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Shay for my photographer coaching program during the early part of 2018 so I was happy to see that she’d signed up for my mini sessions as well.  During my coaching sessions my clients receive a few headshots that they’re able to use for their varying business needs, but this mini session allowed Shay a bit more freedom and variety of poses.  I’m excited to see where her business takes her in the future!

My final mini session was with my cousins, The James family.  I had the opportunity to capture them a few years ago when they were just a family of three, but they have since welcomed two more boys into their family so I was happy to have the opportunity to capture them now that their family is complete.  The boys were troopers even though it was a cold, windy morning.  And I know these are going to be wonderful images for them all to look back on.
